How to be accessible
Web accessibility is about making your website and e-marketing accessible
to all Internet users (disabled, not disabled and machines), regardless
of what browsing technology they are using.
Web and e-marketing accessibility is not complicated and anyone with basic
web development skills can learn how to do it.
Browsing technology
The first rule of accessibility is to make sure your website works with
all different browsing technologies. But do not go too far into the bleeding
edge (remember Boo.com). When you develop for the web, include the following:
- All web browsers (remember Mac users, etc)
- Lynx browsers - a text only browser
- Handheld devices - PDA's and gaming consoles
- Screen readers - for blind customers
- Screen magnifiers - for partially sighted customers
- WebTV - the 'Internet' on a TV
- Very wide screens - the opposite of most of the above
- Slow connection speeds - some people still use dial up, perhaps because
they are on the road
The business case
Being accessible make commercial as well as ethical sense:
- Easier and cheaper website management
- More reach to your e-marketing campaigns
- Compatibility with future technologies
- Better search engine rankings
- Your website and e-marketing is legal
- Your website will be quicker to download and update
- The usability of your website will be improved
- You can use your compliance for publicity
